i want it to take place in a different world from ours but the people are just like us. I was thinking of making them be able to transform into specific animals but i'm still not sure yet. So it isn't just like us but simmilar. You know, kind of magical but i can't decide where it will take place. I was thinking of having it on earth but an island or city that humans have never discovered before so they have different inventions and styles. you know? And then at the end they figure out where they are and that they aren't the only ones if you get what i'm saying. or they know other humans exist but other humans don't know they do. I'm really stuck and can't continue the book until i find a setting. thanks!

You have come up with many choices. Since you are writing sci fi, you should remember that sci fi is actually speculative fiction . It takes a problem from the present and projects it into the future and shows us what will happen if we continue on our present course. So let's say that pollution or global warming has caused people to mutate as a way to adjust to the climate or the pollution and allows them to shapeshift. With some research on global warming and pollution, you could easily explain that. Just remember one thing when dealing with shapeshifters. A lot of writers get it wrong. Physics 101 - you cannot destroy or create matter. So if you shapeshift, it would be to an animal with the same amount of matter. It could be shorter and wider, taller and thinner - whatever - but the matter would be the same.

I think you have an interesting idea here. Figure out what type of animals would adjust better to the heat of global warming. Those would be the animals the people would shift into. They choose to move to an isolated island because they are different and they don't want people to know about them.

You have a good start. Just do not skimp on research. Then make yourself an interesting cast of characters. It would be wise to include some kind of a doctor to care for the others. Then run with it.

See? You weren't stuck after all - you just needed a little focus. An outline would be very beneficial here. Add some backstories and side plots. Who loves who - who hates who - and why. That will make it more interesting. Then you need a main plot. Something is threatening their "paradise" = a disease? Man? What? Pax - C

It seems to me that you are doing about the right kinds of things to do when having ideas that may turn into a book (I just wouldn't say I was 'writing a book' already. I guess I would say I was planning to write a book... but that's just me).

And those things are to write down several different ideas (do write them down, even just on scraps of paper) and try to keep them at least in one room, so they can be gathered and thought over and compared... the different world as to the different land, the people just like/or similar to us, etc.

You have a book warming up in your imagination, just in bits and pieces, and just as it should be! As a scrap of an idea becomes a page, keep that in a loose-leaf binder, and as more pages appear, maybe the arrangements of them can change and become chapters, etc.
And so on to a book, to edit, rewrite, polish... then perhaps even get published!

At this point, just have fun, have all the fun you can, because from here you can go anywhere! Have a good trip!

A world within a world?
A separate world or universe on Earth that no one has discovered with the exception of a few and they have all been passed off as crazy?
Lol, that just came to me. There might already be a book like that though...

Maybe you could write about vampires or some kind of mystical creature f some sort. Give it some thought. You can always write and rewrite, right?
