I don't know if I am spelling it right but piracanthra is one of the best hedges in the world as far as I am concerned. It has one and two inch thorns and keeps kids and animals out, grows thick and in the spring when there are birds around they flock to the plant to grub on the little red berries. The berries are bad to humans, but the birds go apesh*t for them. It is really great to hear hundreds of birds singing in the hedges. We had one where I grew up that grew to about 10 feet high with regular trimming. Used to make pathways through it too. Great stuff, just watch out for the thorns.
