I have been on the shot for about 8 years. I used to have a little spotting when it was getting time to get the next shot. I've been off of the shot for a few months and still no period. There's no chance of me being pregnant. When should I get my period back? Has anyone experienced any bad side effects from extended use of Depo? I have been taking vitamins with extra calcium the past couple of years to hopefully counter-act the bone density loss that could be a side effect

It varies from person to person. It could take several months to get your period back, or it could come back in a month or two with another birth control. I used to be on Depo, and it turned out to be very bad for me. I gained about 50 pounds in a month without changing my lifestyle, and I started having very bad mood swings. Good call on the extra calcium. I'm glad that you were well informed on the shot.

I KEEP SEEIN PEOPLE SAY THAT DEPO WAS BAD FOR THEM BUT IT WASNT FOR ME IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE I STARTED DEPO 2 WEEKS AFTER HAVING MY 1st CHILD AND TOOK IT FOR 5 1/2 YEARS WITH NO SIDE EFFECTS. THAT MEANS FOR OVER 7 YEARS I HAD NO PERIOD AND I LOVED IT WHEN I STOPPED TAKING THE SHOTS IT TOOK ABOUT 9 MONTHS TO GET A PERIOD AND ONLY ABOUT 14 MONTHS TO GET PREGNANT SO I HAVE NOTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS LIFE SAVER

I have friends who did Depo-Provera for a number of years and then went off and didn't get their period back til a year or so after they went off the Depo-Provera.

It could take up to or over a year to get your periods back after depo.
I got mine back in three months after getting off that poison by going on birth control pills (Kariva).
