not sure if Michigan ever shut down before but the federal government has shutdown before. I know this because I work for the government now, but I didn't work for the government when it shut down.
1981 - November: President Reagan vetoed a CR. 400,000 Federal employees went home at lunch and told not to come back. A few hours later, President Reagan signed a new version of the CR and the workers were back the next morning.
1984 - October: No budget and 500,000 workers are sent home. An emergency spend bill has them all back at work the next day.
1986 - October: 500,000 workers are out for a half day. President Reagan signs a final appropriations bill and the workers are ordered back for the next shift.
1990 - October: The Government shuts down during the entire three-day Columbus Day weekend. Most workers were off anyway and an emergency spending bill signed by President Bush has them back at work Tuesday morning.
1995 - December: In the most serious shutdown in history, different functions of government are idled for varying lengths of time until April of 1996.

If they do, it will only be for certain things and< I think, is more as a reason to justify a tax increase than to save any money. There is no talk of cutting salaries although Michigan elected officials are the second highest paid despite having the worst economy in the U.S. The Michigan lottery is one of the things to be shut down and yet it brings over 600 million a year to the state so I am sure that will no last long

It happens in NJ every few years.
Too bad that the Federal Government isn't forced to live by a balanced budget. You would see the pork disappear in an instant. To representative would want to be responsible for shutting down the US gov't for their bridge to nowhere or the subsidy to basil farmers.

As a Michigander, I 'm kinda confused as to just HOW this is going to go down. And NO, I doubt it will really "shut down".
If the Feds would spend as much time and effort on saving us here as they have on Iraq, perhaps we wouldn't be in such a fiscal mess. Can't wait until tax time when it will hit us again....
