my car died so i had it towed to a car repair shop where they looked it over and said that the transmission needed to be replaced. they gave me the option of a new transmission which would be more expensive or a used one. being a poor college student, i opted for the used one...which still costed me a little under $1000.. after the replacement, the car was running fine for about 2 weeks and it died again. since i had a warranty, they replaced it with another used one for free. 3 weeks later, my car died again and then they said that they looked the car over and that it wasn't the transmission that was making the car die. i'm not that familiar with cars...they said something like it was something that connected the engine to the transmission that was malfunctioning and if i don't get my engine replaced the same thing will happen to my transmission if i replace it again. i can't afford to replace the engine..can they do this?? what should i do?? any help will be great, thanks!!

the car is a 96 or 98 (sorry my memory is bad!) toyota camry.

i really want to just take the car to a different shop but how do i go about asking for a refund when theyve already done work on it so many times..?? i paid half with cash and half with credit card.. the guy is really nice but i feel like they should've have repaired it this many times to figure out that something else is wrong!

We need more info to help. Was there any noise, power loss, before your car died? When you say died did the engine quit running or would it just not move anymore? From what you've said so far I wouldn't trust that repair shop to put air in my tires. Find another repair shop, tell them exactly what happened, and have them fix it. Go back to the original shop and get a refund. If you are refused, cancel payment if it was a credit card or check. If it's a problem after that hire a lawyer and get your new repair shop to help you. I believe you were ripped off. I'm an automotive diagnostician and don't replace anything without knowing with 100% certainty that will take care of the problem. They shouldn't have either. good luck.

OK. I'm afraid you are in real trouble. The crankshaft runs through the middle of the engine and basically everything else is dependent on th crankshaft turning. The flywheel is on one end of the crankshaft. The clutch operates on the flywheel as part of the transmission process. Whichevewr gear you are in will affect the speed of rotation of the crankshaft, and therefore the flywheel. Yes they can do it. It's not always easy to say definitely what the cause of automotive problems is. I'm afraid it looks like that without an engine transplant your car is dead.

I would have one of your "car savvy" friends go with you to the shop and have them explain it again. They should have been able to rebuild your transmission for about what you paid for a used one. As far as the crank and flywheel...If there was any problem with those, they should have been able to see it the first time they replaced the trans. What kind of car are we talking about here and what is the year and mileage on it?

Lets see the engine running will not cause the transmission to go out. Each time you replaced the tranny it worked, which means it is not the engine. See another mechanic those you are going to are not doing their job

It sounds like the place that you taken your vehicle to is not very good!
My out look on this would be that you taken the car to them to be diagnosed by "Professionals" and you did not the proper diagnosis.
I would ask them to see what they will do for you seeing as you went on their word that it was not the transmission!
It also does not seem right that they had to do it again and again before the proper cause was found!
Find another shop to deal with!!
More info would help!

He needs to find a new shop like, 4 1/2 months ago. Why would he wait so long? No shop in the world is so busy that it would take them 5 months to look at and fix a car. NEVER.

Maybe your transmission never needed to be replaced in the first place. Get some other opinions before you make your decision.

we would like to help you ,but you have to help us too...We need to know more about your car .introduce us to her .need to know the year ,make ,model, and any other things you could add

assuming they didn't replace or cleaned the torque converter the first time, and it sound that your trans. quit on you, and your car is old 96 model or lower,,dirt in the trans oil will keep ruining your trans ,

tech are considered car doctor too so you might consider asking for a second opinion,.because your car has a major problem.

As much as we need them, mechanics are shady. I quit the auto industry because so much of my job consisted of lying to honest people. The best advice can give you is to have the cars computer scanned for any codes that indicate malfunction. Your car is new enough to know whats going on. Have it scanned before you get screwed over.....again!
