Popping the clutch is the easiest way to get it started, heck find a hill let gravity do the work, then run for at least 20 minutes and you will be fine. Heck with the neighbors

Always give year, make, engine size and complete model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
There are different model Shadows.
One piece seat -
Remove the bolts holding on the seat strap.
Lift the rear of the seat and hit the hump, to the rear of the bike.
Two piece seat -
Remove the bolt behind the passenger seat.
Put your hand under the metal piece the bolt came out of (so you don't scratch the fender).
Push that seat forward.
Remove the bolt behind the riders seat.
Push the seat to the rear of the bike.

I wouldn't take the chance of trying to push start it, or bump start it by rolling down a hill.
If it doesn't start right up (due to improper procedure - compression of the engine locking up the rear wheel for an instant, not enough gas in the carbs, semi-fouled plugs) then you'll have to push your bike home (maybe back up the hill).

You can jump start it using a car battery, as long as the car isn't running.
If you just want to jump start it (and charge the battery later), depending on what model your bike is, you don't even have to remove the seat.
Pull off the side covers and look for the starter solenoid.
The thick gauge red wire goes directly to the battery.
Hook your jumper cables up to that wire (+) and a motor mount bolt (-)

It depends on the type of battery. Most use a regular riding lawn mower battery. I'm not a person who likes to jump batteries. It's too hard to make sure you have a a 6 volt battery or a 12 bolt battery. And you can ask at any auto parts store. As for finding the battery, just keep looking. You have an electric start, it will be somewhere. I'd go out and look at my husbands, but he's out 'cooling off ' on his Kaw 650. It's more than likely under the seat and you have to take it off. Follow your magneto wiring
