I had a feeling the A/C unit was toast, so I kept the window down all summer due to the cost of fixing it. But as fall approches I turned on my heater on windshield defrost and it makes the same noise, but only on that setting, the vent and floor setting is fine. Could it have been the blower motor the whole time? If not I need some ideas so I can fix it.

DO NOT turn on your defrost or a/c. I would unplug the a/c comp then you could use the defrost. The plug should be on the comp., follow the wires that come from the clutch on the front of the comp, Go to a shop that specialises in a/c repair. The clutch can be replaced. I would guess thst is the problem. If you don't need it till summer you can remove the drive belt, unless it's a serpentine.

Other than what you have suggested;
1) The drivebelt is slipping. If this has just started then replacement of the drivebelt is the solution.
2) The pulley/ clutch on the air conditioning compressor is seized or broken causing the belt to slip. Replacement of the air conditioning compressor followed by an air conditioning system evacuation and refill of the oil and refrigerant is the solution.

It's not the blower motor. unplug the a/c compressor relay untill you get to a mechanic. Your defrost will still work just not as well. Good luck.

"Defrost" also turns on the A/C compressor to remove the moisture from the air.
Tighten or replace your belt.

ADDED:
You could unplug the A/C pump so it NEVER turns on.
