I am a single mother of 3 children (17,14,12) and I live in Maryland. Am I considered lower, upper, or in the middle of the middle class? Or am I in lower class? I make 30K-40K a year depending on how much I work.

Tammy,
IRS considers 'upper class' as any family earning over 80K yr.
suggest u visit daveramsey.com to learn ways to keep ur hard earned cash and to teach ur kids hard lessons the easy way from some one else mistakes.
even with 30k u could become wealthy and ur kids wealthier so u can live off them ;-)

Check your income vs. Kid ratio against government stats. http://money.cnn.com may have some final answers for you.
The problem in answering the question is that averages have a mean, median and mode. If I look at your slary and wher it falls in the range of all salries sya from $1dollar to 2 billion a year (Bill Gates) .... you are a skid-row bum dirt poor. If I look at typical weighted salary averages ... you are probably high end lower class. Remove a couple of kids and you are probably mid to lower-middleclass. Kids divide the income and complicate the formula.

It all depends on your perspective. People earning $15,000 think you are wealthy. People earning $200,000 feel sorry for you because they think you are so poor.

Just look for the nice events and pleasant people in your life and appreciate them. That is more important than labelling yourself as upper or lower class.

$40K on either coast seems like low , esp with kids .
In Ohio that would be OK $$$$ ,
But if you already own your house , that would be good $$$$$ .
