I have to make a french horn lyre. I wouldn't normally make it, all of the music stores are closed that carry these. I'm having trouble making the top clamp light enough to be handled by the small skinny metal part.

I made the top part out of a plastic hanger clamp.
What should I make the skinny long metal part out of?

A piece of a metal coat hanger should be rigid enough.

(I just looked at one I have and maybe you can use a shish-k-bob skewer instead? Or one of those big lacers that come in a poultry lacing kit? Check in the grocery store for it.)

How big is your top part? I am thinking you would need wood, but I don't know if we are talking BBQ skewer or broomstick, or something in between.
