not very long at all,
it IS really scary to think about how much we depend on modern technology as a way of life.

Absolutely.

Just think... While pounding out flint knives or cutting hunting spears or weaving cloth, making a sun dial, foraging for edible goods, etc. may not be skills any of us have practiced, in our modern day, we already have the knowledge. Anyone who has been in scouting knew how to make fire or do any of the above things when they were ten.

Heck, I can make gunpowder on the fly.

One of the great benefits to living in the modern era is that an elementary or even high school education would go a long way in ensuring your survival.

Now, living alone in the wilderness would be pretty rough, but not impossible. If we are talking stone-age era, there would be tribes and networks of people to put all these aspects of living together... you still wouldn't have to pull a Survivor-Man trick, but even then, I think most people would make out okay, once they acclimated to rough food, bugs, and sleeping on grass mats with no AC. You might not enjoy cleaning kills or tanning hides, but I think everyone would get over it, sooner or later.

With modern era knowledge, many of us could probably pull a 'Merlin,' and be considered some kind of mystic holy man by predicting solar events and whatnot.

does that question scare me? a little. Here we are "somewhat" prepared for hurricanes so I can say that I have things packed for a quick move, the question would be "how" would I move, to where and when, and that is left up to last minute circumstances (if caught off guard, and will depend on quick research and contacts, depending on if done early enough, if others respond or if their phones are on "record", etc. I'm prepared to do without a cellphone, phone, and computer.

Some people are saving gold and silver, others are stocking up on personal needs and food (aluminum cans and dry well packaged foods) as barter, still others are investing in storage plus doing safety measures. Still others are winding down to travel lightly, ready to go into bunkers, storing personal information, buying things they think they will need.
I think most of the country is set to live for 1-3 months, but it depends on the circumstance and we can't be prepared for everything. Perhaps teamwork with neighbors could make us more prepared for different circumstances, with dependence mostly on family. The rich have a better grasp on what's needed, plus the transportation to get out of harms way. Since I'm from the old school, to a point I can survive, but no one can accomplish this on their own.

Well lets see, in my previous marriage my EX-husband thought other women, drugs and booze was more important than his wife and children and never brought any money home and me and the kids lived without power and gas and even food at times and we are still here, happy now and going strong, so it doesn't scare me and I think I could live just fine.

I've studied up on the subject of survival in the wilderness, so if I could get past the first winter, I could probably survive for decades.

Hey, if they could do it, why couldn't I? Seriously, why not?

Edit: I mean, while we rely heavily on everything we've amassed around us, some people today still do it. I think any of us could do it if we stuck together and kept our heads on straight. I really believe I could do it on my own. Heck no, it doesn't scare me!
