To my ears, Carl Palmer had horrible meter and Bruford has a terrible sound and plays without imagination. Anybody care to agree or disagree?

I appear to be in the minority here. But as a musician, I wouldn't hire either of them (other than to sell tickets).

Palmer? I do find him to be a most overrated cat, but his drumming worked well within the context of ELP.

Bruford, on the other hand, always had something clever to bash on. Compare "One More Red Nightmare" with "Frame by Frame," and you'll catch my drift. Is it a pretty sound? Not always. But he's pretty darn good.

I don't think Bruford was overrated and believe he is one of the all time best technical drummers ...like Gene Kruppa. I think his tight crisp style does give the feeling of being unimaginative, but that crisp sound is what some people like about him. "Feels Good to Me" is a great album. His style was ideal for King Crimson and his years with them were some of his best. In '71, Yes was the first recording band I ever saw live. I saw them a number of times after and Bruford was obviously an integral part of the band's sound.

I believe Palmer is very good, a little one dimensional and ...yes somewhat overrated and his side of Works II (or was it Works I) indicates that. It was more likely that Lake and Emerson had more to do with the success of the band than Carl did. I have seen them live also and ELP were a very impressive live act also.

I think, Keith Moon is the most underrated all time drummer. Now Phil Collins, on the other hand, is an okay drummer but a highly overrated songwriter and singer!

Carl Palmer was arguably over-rated. That's highly debatable. However, Bill Bruford was one of the best. Especially his work with King Crimson.

Undoubtedly, the best drummer in classic rock was Bill Ward, but he doesn't get the credit he deserves.

Cheers :-)

No, I disagree, and I think both drummers were excellent drummers. When people tell you how great the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are, but forget to tell you how pathetic both of their drummers were, I always remind them of what the drummers of E.L.P. and King Crimson could do.

Listen to the Beatles' "Get By With A Little Help From My Friends" and the Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash" - and then you will hear "horrible meter and (drumming) played without imagination."

I am not a musician so I don't know about stuff like meter but I know what I like and I think they are great. So is Brian Davidson of The Nice and you never hear him mentioned.

I wouldn't so far as to say they were overrated but there are many drummers I like better.

Not extremely. Maybe slightly.
