What is a realistic amount of RAM memory I should have for good performance with XP and Vista?

you could pull of 512 with xp. but you really need 1 gb. you could pull off 1gb with vista. but you really need 2gb.

XP needs 256k minimum, Vista 512k. For good office tasking double that amount

If you like gaming and do some desktop publishing, go to 512k in XPO and 1GB in Vista.

If you are into Corel and Photoshop, no less than 1 GB RAM is recommended for Xp and 2GB in Vista.

Above that, you find on one side games, which also require a dedicated videocard, wich do better with a fast hard drive, and the 1/2 GB memory,

and finally, if you are planing guffing around with CS3 and 10-16 mpix digital photos, you will need no less than 3 GM in XP and 4GB in Vista.

This comes from 8 years experience.

XP 512 will do Ok but would go with a gig
For Vista, would not go with less than 2 gig, with one it will run but will hammer the system
