No, ASCAP and BMI have nothing to do with copyright. Your copyright your music through the U.S. Copyright Office (although copyright is actually automatic upon creation, but registration makes proof easier and offers other benefits, too).

As a music composer, you should join ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. These organization will collect royalty payment for you for public performances and broadcasting rights. If you transfered your rights to your publisher, trust me, they have joined one of the performce rights organizations. They provide additional services for composers like yourself and will be happy to assist in your copyright registration questions.
