A U.S. soldier broke down in tears Thursday as he testified that he was ordered to shoot an unarmed Iraqi man, and that his sergeant laughed and told the trooper to finish the job as the man convulsed on the ground.

Vela testified that Hensley told him to shoot the Iraqi man, although he was not armed and had his hands in the air when he approached the soldiers.

"He asked me if I was ready. I had the pistol out. I heard the word 'shoot.' I don't remember pulling the trigger. It took me a second to realize that the shot came from the pistol in my hand," he said, crying and speaking barely above a whisper.

remember: we're fighting those unarmed iraqi civilians over there so that we don't have to fight them here.

First to answer the question, this is not the act of a liberator and not what the USA stands for... not even close.

This type of problem tends to start occurring during occupations... meaning after the war is actually over and the troops are basically playing the role of the police while the country is 'reconstructed'.

The mentality of the troops changes... they get sick and tired of having to 'babysit' and feel unappreciated... dehumanizing the enemy while feeling superior.

What bothers me is what appears to be a lack of punishment for those that are doing this stuff. The recent trials of those soldiers in California... didn't one get acquitted and the other only got 6 months for similar crimes? I can't remember exactly but I do recall it being minimal punishment.

Why is it acceptable to use torture and murder the insurgents in cold blood, yet not acceptable when they blow up cars, etc... and murder our troops? I know that sounds like an odd question but I purposely poised it that way... trying to show that it is not moral to murder in cold blood the enemy stating, '... well that's what they do...'

Note the answer from 'doc' above. Most of these neocon lemmings lack decency, civility and the basic tenets that make human beings tingle....

Rather than answer for the actions of their discredited, disgraced and incompetent leadership they resort to personal insults.... Have a look at the question I posed on similar only 20 minutes ago and you will see there is a concerted effort to abuse rather than answer....

Shame on this administration.

Did Haditha not prove that terrorists make horrible sources of information?

Why are so many eager to accept the worst of accusations against America but go through extraordinary pain to excuse the animals who butcher innocents?

Why am I not surprised? Remove the rose tinted glasses you watch your government controlled media through, and ultimately, American soldiers are no better than the 'enemy' soldiers.

Proud to be non American and non ignorant

There are always many atrocities in war, that's why it should always be avoided if & when at all possible. There are also two sides to every story. I prefer to hear both before making up my mind.

I doubt that an enemy newspaper is going to give you the whole truth on a story in times of war.

Better to terrorize them over there and make them too afraid to come terrorize us over here.
