The fact that it kicks a.s.s probably is a major contributing factor to its success with fans.
Fact is, a lot of good movies do crapilly in the theatres, either because of bad marketing or because they just don't have mainstream appeal. Titanic was a huge success in the theatres, but I'd challenge anybody to find a major fan base for it now ten years later. But movies like Office Space and The Big Lebowski were actually good films, and while they didn't have big actors or multi-million dollar marketing budgets tagged to them, they still do well because they have something more mainstream movies don't have - originality.

I think the common denominators amongst all "cult classics" or movies with a fanbase like The Big Lebowski would be either the unique writing style, the soundtrack, or both.
What I like about the Big Lebowski:
The characters. They are interesting, fun, and entertaining; all of them --or just about all of them are.
The dialogue is non-stop and it's hilarious. It's a moot point, but the humor is mature, in that it's no Van Wilder or anything by the 6 out of the whatever number of crappy writers of Scary Movie. There are a couple of exceptions in The Big Lebowski, but for the most part, the story flows well.
The cinematography and the soundtrack are both great and compliment eachother well.

Aside from "The Dude's" character ... I'd have to say the film's kitschy bowling theme and surreal sequences are what give it cult like elements -- but out of everything nothing tops John Turturro's character Jesus Quintana! I totally LMFAO when his character was introduced. Just classic.

I think it's popular for two reasons: It incorporates bowling -- and the word "F*CK" is used about once every 4 seconds.
