It is lawful for most of the reasons already given above, what it interesting however is that it says right on it " Not for Identification Purposes". It is when combined with Photo ID considered verified proof off indentity, and it establishes ones proper IRS Tax Account Number. Your Social Security account is secondary to the govts priority of first insuring your Federal Income Tax withholding is set up. Employers must have your I-9 to cover themselves in case of a tax audit. Green card holders also need a SS# even though many may never collect social security years from now.

Not only is it lawful, they are required by law to have copies of the information you provide on the I-9 form

With the exception of employment, I see no need to provide a copy of it. They may request the number, but not a copy. SS cards were never meant to be used for half the things they are now used for.

yes legally they have to have at least ur ss# to pay u and verify that u are legally allowed to work here i lost mine and they took old passport instead but I don't think that they have to do that.

Thats if u are employee if u are customer then no way can they ask u for u that

Other than getting the job no its not. But hey people give their card out everyday for everything why does it matter right.

Unless you are claiming self employment and contracting your services, I suspect that you will be expecting them to keep track of your FICA and various other taxes.
