First of all, I think you should know MSN isn't the IM messenger/e-mail thing anymore.
Microsoft has changed it to Windows Live branding.
So Live is way better than AOL. Here's why:
On the Windows Live Messenger (WLM) side:
1. Better look.
2. Works much better and efficiently
3. Status messeages, and many other way to show your status at the moment.
4. Support for webcam and audio
5. You can draw messages
6. You can play games, share music, share files, etc.
7. You can call somebody with it
8. It uses less hard drive space
9. It's Microsoft certified - so it's guaranteed to work better on Windows than AIM does.
10. By using WLM, you can help save the world (http://im.live.com/)
11. Practically tons of people outside the US use it
12. The ads are not intrusive like AIM.
13. It does not take over you computer
14. You can change the color scheme much more
15. Tons of add-ons (but don't put too much - it will bog it down)
16. You can choose from many tabs to look at content
17. There are bots on WLM, so if you're bored, you can find answers to math, geography questions, etc.
That's just some of it.
As for Window Live Hotmail:
1. First to use proper AJAX, to make looking at your mail much better.
2. Beautiful UI
3. Less ads than AOL
4. Easy to use
5. Better contacts. WL Contacts are the best in the business. Easy to modify and find your friends.
6. A whole toolbar of things to improve your e-mail
7. Start typing in a contact's name for your "To" box, and up comes a list of contacts, as you type.
8. 20 MB more attachments than AOL
9. It actually works
10. 5 free GB of storage
11. Many themes.
12. Better help files.
Overall, Windows Live is a much better solution than what AOL will ever offer. AOL is the bad company in the tech world. I suggest you don't join their bandwagon at all.

If you mean for messenger..Well AOL has technical errors from time to time.MSN seems to be more popular,so I would advise you to use that,also Iam sure you can do more things on it and more people use it compared to AOL.
But for general Internet connection then AOL,it's not that great but I believe if you have problems you will be able to get better/more help from people as it a common service provider.

msn. aol literally take over ur computer. not good. go with msn you get so much more with it aswell

well i have both.
i use msn for the email. [hotmail]
and aol instant messanger for obviously IM.
