HAHA It has something to do with the direction of our hand when we do scrubbing and washing. Think about it...when we scrub, the movement is usually downwards (pababa) - as in removing the dirt and making it go down. And when we wash (esp. our face), the strokes are upwards (pataas) - every girl knows that - it prevents our skin face from sagging!

Because whenever we scrub, it always starts from the upper part of our torsos down to our feet. When we wash, the direction of the flow of the water is away from our faces or our hands excluding our bodies, of course, because we never say 'I would like to wash up my body.'

It's all to do with gravity.
Before we had power showers and the like you washed from the bottom upwards. That way when you reached the top you were using (relatively) clean water to rinse the rest of you.
I agree English is odd, try explaining to a foreigner how a "Fat chance" and a "Slim chance" are exactly the same thing !!
