It may be a corroded filler tube. I had this happen to me. A replacement part would have cost $415.00, but I took it off, cleaned it up with a wire brush and coated it with $8 worth of two part epoxy. It hasn't leaked since.
It may also just be a hose clamp where the fuel line joins the tank that needs tightening.

You might have a loose hose clamp on one of the fuel lines. You will probably need to drop the tank to fix it. Some cars have an access plate to get to the fuel tank sending unit which sometimes also has the fuel lines attached to it. Check that out first.
Important!!! Don't go close to a welder with a leaking fuel tank. A full fuel tank might catch on fire. An empty tank is like a bomb. For fuel to explode you need a little fuel and a lot of air in a sealed container.

yea... that would be the situation where you leave the house and call the gas company(or even 911) from a few doors down the street (potential for BIG boom) if you suspect a gas leak, trust me, the gas company will not be upset if it turns out to be a false alarm. this is one of those serious situations you always hear about. the gas company will come with a natrual gas detector and will find the exact place of the leak. don't risk this one. and no, carbon monoxide is CO. natural gas is a hydrocarbon chain (BIG DIFERENCE) natual gas should have a distinct smell of rotten eggs. carbon monoxide is colorless odorless gas that can only be detected by an alarm (or death). oh, and to check for leaks in gas lines, windex is quick, easy, and effective.

It shouldn't take more than half a dozen miles or so to drive off enough gas to stop it from leaking, if it is just from overfilling the tank. If the leak doesn't stop, you'll have to take the car to a reputable repair shop to be fixed. A fuel leak is too dangerous for a do-it-yourself repair.

You have to empty the tank and lower it eather the O ring is cracked on the acess hole or there is a line leak at the top of the tank in a line.
