If you have a healthy pet you have a slim chance of getting a sickness from it. So slim, there is no reason you should be scared to buy or adopt a pet.
Some people say that pets like Guinea Pigs and rats (not sure about hamsters) can give humans the common cold. But some people say this isn't true. I assure you though, hamsters and most pets will probably not make you sick unless they are unhealthy or you are not clean after handling them.
But for someone who does fear getting sick from pets, stay away from turtles and birds. Though, once again, if your pet is healthy and you keep clean after dealing with your pet, turtles or birds shouldn't worry you either. I mention this because people seem to get sick from turtles and birds more often that from other pets.

I don't think there is One animal that you can't get sick from, and that even goes for Fish, unless it's dead, and even that you can catch something from if it's dead long enough, LOL..

Hamsters and rats, if they are not cleaned can transmit the hanta virus. But re-read what i said, IF THEY ARE NOT CLEANED PROPERLY!!!

Any animal or human for that matter, can transmit ecoli, bacteria from themselves to human, not just birds, dogs, cats, or the like. Worms are more commonly transmitted from dogs and cats to humans as is the skin diseases. But they first must come in contact with them in order to transmit them to you.

Hamsters are common for "wet tail". Research what that is first and look for the signs before you purchase the hamster. Then get it seen by a vet after you buy it.

Also know that hamsters only live about two years, so their life span is not long.

Natural precautions can eliminate a lot of trouble, no matter what pet you have. I've had dogs and cats for 30 years and the ONLY thing I got from one of them was a ringworm spot on my leg when one had it on their side. I think you can be too worked up over anything to do yourself any good if you obsess on it.

If you want a sickness free pet--I'm afraid you'd be stuck with only fish.
