I had sublet my apt. With the tenant now moving out, I'd like to have it professionally cleaned for the next tenant. Is it normal to deduct for this or will the tenant put up a fight?

It depends on what the lease states. Like the other said normal wear and tear is expected and can not be deducted from the security deposit. But some leases have special provisions such as part of the deposit can be used to professionaly clean the carpets (one of my leases had this).

You can not deduct for normal wear and tear. Having said that, if your tenant does not clean and have it ready for the next tenant you can deduct for cleaning services. Do a walk through with your tenant if they aren't already gone and let them know what you expect. I have been a landlord for years and got sick of cleaning up messes myself and started having the pro's come in. The cost come out of tenants deposit. The can bulk, but your in the right.

You can only deduct for what is beyond normal wear and tear. If you have to clean out big stains or damage, then it's ok to take out. To just clean for the next tenant, that's your duty as renter.

A security deposit is NOT a cleaning fund unless there has been extreme abuse above and beyond normal wear and tear .

You did not indicate that , and it sounds like typical schmuck weasel trying to milk someone else for your responsibilities .
If it was totally abnormal build up of filth ( animals run amuck without cleaning it up ) ,
I apologize but , You made No indication of that .
