Not if the 8 year old was educated in america. A japanese 8 year old could.
A child educated in america should be able to handle this by 12 or 13.

Sure: x = distance on Sunday; x + 50 = distance on Saturday;
(x) + (x+50) = 450
2x + 50 = 450
2x = 400
x = 200
She traveled 250 miles on Saturday, and 200 miles on Sunday.

An 8 year old might not set it up with algebra as I did, but he should be able to get the concept. It doesn't use multiple variables; it just requires some logical thinking, and most kids are capable of that.

Not sure.

It effectively breaks down to
450 = Saturday Distance + Sunday Distance
Where Saturday Distance = Sunday Distance + 50

So,
450 = 2 * Sunday Distance + 50
Sunday Distance = (450 - 50)/2

Which equals 200 miles on Sunday and therefore 250 miles on Saturday.

You tell me whether an 8 year old could solve that!

Nooooooooooo Freakingggggggggg Wayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!
I am way over 8 and it even sounds complicated to me. Well mayb if that 8 year old was Albert Einstein re-incarnated or better still Bill Gates! But then again let's not underestimate, I mean Children of nowadays are really smart. So actually I would say there's a 50:50 chance.

I think he should be able to do it.
Try to understand it this way:

complete distance is 450 miles.

On sunday travelled distance x, on saturday x + 50.

so, x + (x + 50) = 450
2x + 50 = 450
2x = 400
x = 200 miles.

So, she travelled 200 miles on sunday and 250 miles on saturday.

If the eight year old were Gauss, certainly yes. Remember how he added the numbers from 1 to 100 in less than a minute by taking 50(101)?

I would say no. The average 8 year old could not solve that. It is 2 equations in 2 unknowns. I couldn't have. I was good at math but I didn't begin learning algebra until 5th grade.

probably not because most 8 year olds aren't into algebra.... It seems really easy but you have to remember 8 year olds are in 2-3 grade and i was learning long division then not algebra

depends on the 8 year old

I highly doubt that an average 8 year old would be able to solve it.
