it is the prisoners who are aging in the system. Those that are in wheelchairs or bound to their beds and are not a flight risk, should be discharged to nursing homes in my opinion. The South has much stiffer penalties the article stated,
so for a minor conviction, say of pot, they get 20 years.for something thatt happened in 1995. At this point theya er too sick to run

I say discharge a demented, ill prisoner to a nursing home with an ankle bracelet tracking apparatus (as if he/she could intentionally escape, huh?). That way, Medicaid/Medicare could be used for payment, just as they would for an elderly non-prisoner. Medicaid could be paid back after the inmate's death from his/her estate (if there is one), just as it is when non-prisoners' estates do upon their death.
I don't think seniors are getting "blamed". It's just one more problem our prisons face and is the stupidity of an inflexible system. Old, sick prisoners should be released back home on house arrest.

Seems to me it's the YOUNG, STUPID ones who get sent to prison most. Guess what age group uses a gun to knock off a 7-11 for $20, and then gets sent up the river. Not some old codger like me, that's for sure. It's some drugged out, middle school drop out, 20 something moron, that's who.
As far as costing the state too much money for medical care, look at those who REFUSE to get a job and depend on the government for health care.

Most weren't seniors when they went in. My ex husband's step son went into prison when he was 14 and they are still saying that his parole officer hasn't been born yet. Doug says that Tommy will be in his late 70s or early 80s before he will even be up for parole.
So not everything is told as it really IS, on the news...

One that is not deserved. Older folk are an asset to us all. I was not aware that the prisons were being flooded with seniors, I thought it was a different sort who were doing that. That is for another category though, not this one. My feelings are this........... you have worked hard for so many years and have endured so much, and you are getting so little appreciation. Let me say this ... before I step off of my soap box.... Thank you!

The world is heading for times where there is a sort of process of elimination going on.
I've got about 20 hours, of DVDs from Professors through to David Ike on what is happening, behind the scenes and it is pretty scary.
You pay you Medical Health Care and then you get told, you are draining the system.
Bush and his cronies are behind so much skulduggery here it is not funny!

I am not surprised that we are taking the heat. We worked our whole life to be able to enjoy the advantage of getting the money back that we put into the system and now, we get the blame. Craziness. It is political.

I look at it this way. They did something bad to get sent there. They certainly aren't going to stop aging just because they went to prison.
Better in there, than out here.

Our country takes care of every one else (countries) and then when they don't look as smart as they thought, they have to blame someone!! Seniors are to blame as well as the younger ones. But I think they get more blame than other groups. People try to make ours lives easier, but alot of times it makes them lazy! And if you think of it don't you remember saying " I want my childern to have it better than we did."
