Tap on the ceiling, the sound is more solid where the joist is, then push something like a bradawl into the best sounding place, if it is solid, it's a joist.

look in your loft ..note which way they run ..ie front to back etc ...your first joist will be next to the wall in the direction they run ..most joist are set at 16 inch centres ..this means there are normally 14 inches in between ..all joist are 2 inches wide ...therefore centre to centre is 16 inches ..so from wall measure 17 inches ..knock in a nail you should hit wood ,,if not move along a bit ...allso a tap with your knuckles wil tell you if its hollow (no joist) or a more solid sound ..joist

Buy a Stud Finder. They're less than $30.

walk accross the loft and when you dont fall thro the ceiling youve found a joist haha

There are studfinders at home depot for under $10.00 and it works.
