That's a really tough question. There are some very troubling and disturbing things seen in the news every day.
But overall, I'd say the world we live in today is a fair bit better than it was 100 years ago.
There have always been war, famine, disease, poverty and all that stuff. And of course that is everywhere today.
But at least today corruption is exposed more often, and civil rights exist of people in the Western World.
In some ways things are no better or worse than they were a few years ago.
But I like to be optimistic.

As a path to answering your question, consider the following news summary:
Market results were mixed today. Wall St. analysts say that the investment community is unsure regarding the affects of future monetary policy, consumer spending and pressures on corporate profits.
In the Middle East, tensions remain high as peace forces attempt to moderate recent fighting between Israel and Palestinian rebels. The U.S. Secy of State has been dispatched in order to meet with several of the parties privately in order to bring an end to the most recent outbreaks of violence and to attempt to bring the conflicting factions to the bargaining table. Prospects for success still remain uncertain.
On the political front, the field of presidential candidates continue to criss-cross the country pointing out the failures of the current administration in matters of foreign policy as well as domestic issues such as jobs, taxes and infrastructure for the future.
Researchers at the National Cancer Institute today hailed the work of several scientists in the field of cancer research. They summarized their statement by insisting that a cure for cancer was "on the horizon".
Now, from what time period did this news summary come?
It could have come from 1950 or 2007 or 1960 or almost any period in the general vincinity of those dates. Take your pick.
Have things really changed in some kind of fundamental way?

The last eight years has been a steady decline in morals and kindness and cruelty to others to the point most people hardly recognize the earth.

I don't want to disappoint you, but things are really pretty much as they always have been. Try going 10 days without watching the TV news and your mood will pick up. I promise.

I have been to the USA and you can keep it... I am more free here in my homeland if you ask me.. Sure, I may live in a communist country, but where I live, lawyers are never needed. And, sure, I may have to bribe the police for a national ID in my country or to send my son to school, but I don't have to pay no where close to the taxes you pay. My water, and electric are about $2.00 USD a month.. My fellow countrymen are still respectful and woman still dress appropriate and believe in love.. My life is 10 times more filled with joy than a Western mans life! No offense, but I would never live in USA.
