Im not sure why this is. If youre playing a sport (ill say baseball because thats where im coming from) and the other team starts talking trash, what should you do?

It doesnt make any sense. If you taunt them back or start playing dirty, that makes you look bad because now youve become the enemy.

If you dont do anything, then you look like a pussy.

I hate it when people talk trash when they didnt do anything: when they scored cause a defender made an error. but if i cant retaliate or say something back, i look like a coward! (i didnt make the error, i play catcher, it was our 1st baseman.)

i need to know how to react so that i dont look bad or cowardly.

today, i held my temper. barely. in case you wanted to know, after a homerun due to an error, i came very close to throwing a close range shot at the kid because he was talking ****.

so what do i do

If your team is ahead, mention the score. Loudly.

I've also found being over-polite drives people nuts. Just don't go down to their level.

well me personally i just ignore it, i dont care what other people look at me as, i would respect myself much more for not sinking to that level. sure the media and fans might notice it, but i never cared what the media thought.

i play hockey and im a goalie and i let in my share of bad goals and sure i might get ragged on for it, but i keep my cool cuz i know ill make some saves too.

in baseball i play short and i make my errors, but when i make a great play no one notices, when i make an error, everyone notices.. thats just the way it goes.

just ignore it and make sure YOU know your doing the right thing.

as cheesy as it may sound thats right thing to do.

My son plays, his coach has always encouraged the kids to start talking each other up when the other team talked trash. To ignore them as much as you could, be the better men, and yell out support for each other. Sometimes, depending on how nasty the other team was, it would fire our team up to really play hard.

I played like inspi(red). The other team would shut up because I had better one-liners about how bad I was than they had! LOL

Now-a-days, for my kids league, chatter is outlawed and we just cheer for our own kids and encourage them - more Christian that way :)

Well, as a former pitcher from little league through high school, any time someone badmouthed me I would agree with them and they'd be so confused that they would literally fall over or sometimes "spontaneously combust".

Example:
Some guy: Hey you smell.
Me: Yep.
Some guy: Well uh uh....uh....ummmm...*poof*
