I know of two classics that are set during the Civil War: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. The latter is hardly a romance, the former has SOME romance in it. There's also Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

There's Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier - also made into a movie - which has gotten a lot of critical acclaim. I have to say that I didn't like it. There's the so-called sequel to Gone With The Wind, which would be post-Civil War - Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley.

Here is a list of Civil War Romances: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywords=Civil%20war&rh=n%3A23%2Ck%3ACivil%20war&page=1

The House of Winslow series by Gilbert Morris has several books set around the Civil War (the entire series is very good and most of the books can stand alone): The Last Confederate (book 8); The Dixie Widow (9); The Wounded Yankee (10); The Union Belle (11). Eugenia Price has quite a few romance novels set around that period; for instance the Savannah series (Savannah; To See Your Face Again; Before the Darkness Falls; Stranger in Savannah). Jane Peart wrote the Brides of Montclair series, which also has some books set during the Civil War and they can usually stand alone like Yankee Bride/Rebel Bride (book 5). Captains and the Kings by Taylor Caldwell has part during the Civil War.

John Jakes has an excellent series set during the Civil War called The North and South Trilogy (North and South; Love and War; Heaven and Hell).

I hope you find something you want to read.

There is a trilogy of novels by a woman named Heather Graham. I love them. #1) One Wore Blue, #2) One Wore Gray, #3) One Rode West. They are about a family divided by the war. Jesse (#1) fights for the North, Daniel (#2) fights for the South, and their sister Christa (#3) decides to go west. I found these books on Amazon. There's also a site that has a list of romance novels that take place during the Civil War. http://www.likesbooks.com/war.html
