Hope this Helps pretty much hit it on the head describing the nature of a Narcissist. I have a Narcissist in my family and for years I couldn't for the life of me figure out his pattern of thinking. In the public eye he is charming and caring and even comes across as a humanitarian, but to those who are closest to him, he is extremely high maintenance, self-indulgent, never takes the blame for anything, and would easily, without any conscience, throw you under the bus when it came to putting the blame on you.
My sanity was saved when I learned about the Narcissist and how they operated. My first thoughts were, "You mean there is a name for this behavior?" I had no idea, but now that I do, I have a lot more compassion for this person, and actually feel sorry for him because I know that he truly cannot see himself as he is, and in fact suffers from self-loathing somewhere deep inside of himself. The Narcissistic disorder is sort of like self-loathing in the extreme opposite.

The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.
In psychology and psychiatry, excessive narcissism is recognized as a severe personality dysfunction or personality disorder, most characteristically Narcissistic personality disorder, also referred to as NPD.
Narcissistic personality is characterized by behavior or a fantasy of grandiosity, a lack of empathy and a need to be admired by others. Narcissistic personality has a pathological unrealistic or inflated sense of self-importance, has an inability to see the viewpoints of others, and is hypersensitive to the opinions of others.

Someone (usually a man) who loves himself to the ultimate degree.
It derives from an ancient legend about a man who could not refrain from looking at his own reflection in a lake. (mirrors hadn't been invented then)
