Consider the relation:
y = 1/(x-3)
As the value of x increases and approaches 3 the denominator becomes very small. And the division 1 divided by a very small number becomes very large.
We say the value of y approaches infinity as x approaches 3. You can use a figure 8 lying on its side. That's the symbol for infinity.
