I need to compare a modern literature piece to a classical myth. It can't be a myth just re-written, it needs to be a parallel story.

Are you using "modern literature" as in how that term is used at university or as all books written within the past century?

An Appointment in Samarra is a short story by by W. Somerset Maugham and parrallels a classic Arabian Folk Story or Myth about death. The Stories of the character Paul Bunyon also follow various Norse myths of old.
