When I taught my daughter the oval shape, we used flash cards. I'd show them an egg or a football (especially for the boys) to tell them that it is oval. Maybe you could get them to cut out pictures from some old magazines and have them glue them onto a tag board labeled "Oval." You could even take some pictures with your digital camera of everyday things that are shaped like ovals (things that they would see almost everyday in their environment) and have the students identify the pictures. Not only would they learn what an oval is, they can actually connect the oval with everyday things.

Simple. Take a circular object or something with a circular cross section) and squash it. A rubber band will do... Toilet paper roll... paper band...

Have them identify objects that have oval cross sections, come up with an art project using only ovals. (Cut up newspapers, colour them, stick them on to make whatever.)

Teach it as a "stretched circle". Make up a story to go with it. Maybe "Circle" was playing with Square and Triangle and they started to argue over who would get to play with Circle first. They started to pull on Circles arms...pulling back and forth, back and forth, until Circle was not a circle anymore...He was an Oval.
