I think you need a tow ball to use U-haul. They are not included.
AND you need to have a roof rack for the "on roof" packing boxes.

I can not ship the items because they are needed for the trip. We are traveling with a newborn, 3 cats and 3 humans!

rent a roof top carrier from uhaul or buy one from sears, or most auto parts stores. The use straps and hooks to clamp to your rain gutter, or on some models to the frame, then you close the door to hold it in place.

If you have to overload the vehicle then try to distribute the weight about the vehicle evenly. Overloading both axles a bit is better than overloading one axle alot. Also make sure your tyres are inflated to correct pressures for being at the weight limit i.e. the maximum value on your vehicles handbook or the maximum pressure on the tyre sidewall if it is less than what is in the handbook. If you are loading the rear seats and passenger seats to the roof then if possible try to secure the load to prevent it from moving around whilst driving.

If your car is full to bursting and you have luggauge then other alternative is make two trips or put your bags on a bus service or airplane flight and meet it at the other end.

Since you didn't mention the type of car you're referring to,
I just wanted to respond to guy who said that U-Haul trailers hook up to any car------some small cars are not intended to pull anything!!

I am sure there is someplace on the web, (use google.com) where you could find a roof pouch or whatever, to put on the roof of your car. Maybe even at Wal Mart.
