You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp
It's important to note that everything takes RAM. Not only security products (such as active anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall) eat up memory but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc) and malware all compete for system resources. The presence of Malware (viruses, spyware, etc) will particularly eat up your system resources so you may want to run your resident security products such as antispyware and antivirus applications to ensure that your system is clean.

Is it a desktop?--if so... its probably DDR or DDR2. Most new pc's have DDR2 in them. You need to contact your pc manufacturer to find out the exact kind of ram it can use. When you add ram use the same speed ram as your old ram(400mhz.533mhz,666mhz,etc.) A good site to buy ram is---Pricewatch.com----they have many stores, good prices, some even have free shipping.

the easiest thing to do is to open the computer, take the old RAM out, and take that to Circuit City so you can compare its shape with new RAM. Also, your old RAM will give statistics like 533MHZ, you will need to buy the same speed.

go to dell support and have them tell you what you can and cannot do,if the machine,or the machine is built for only so much ram,you can over do it if not careful, which would do more harm than good
