All other gears work fine. If I put the car in reverse & rev the enginge I get "Transmission program" error on the dash and the car goes into limp mode (locked into 3rd gear). This all happened suddenly. transmission was working fine. I backed up, drove down the street, third gear shifted a little funny, like it was slipping. after that no reverse. all other gears including third work & shift fine. what do you think could be the problem & how do I fix it?

no seriously... I agree with the other comment, you should scan your car for a diagnostic to know for sure what is the malfunction.

Transmission failures can be really expensive if not addressed immediately. If you google "BMW no reverse", you will see some very worrying posts by other owners.
I would recommend that you join AAA and have your car towed to the dealer to check it out. Don't even atempt to drive it anymore!

Sounds like you might have a solenoid problem or a shifter switch problem. Take the car to a mechanic and get the problem properly diagnosed.
