Because of people like you, who are full of hatred for others. Why are you apologetic? Why the need to explain that you, the people, do not make the government policy? That's right, you don't. If it were up to you, you would "let other people in a conflict do each other in", and you'd also "make a new reality show and whoever wins the money gets to use it to rebuild their country". That's what you said in an answer to a Q about US foreign policy. That's what you think of human tragedy and lives lost? It's time to show your true colours, don't be shy now!
It's good to remember one thing: energy cannot disappear into thin air. The kind of bad thoughts you're nurturing for others will come round and you'll face them in all their might.
I don't wish you that; that's just the way it goes in life.

It has not been my experience that people around the world hate us. It has been my experience that our government is despised however, in many parts of the world, and that most foreigners are smart enough to know the difference between us and our government.

Of course you will see plenty of other reasons right here in this question...mostly our arrogance ("we saved their asses in World War II"--which completely negates the fact that the USSR destroyed the German army, not us) and our ignorance ("we are the most generous nation on earth"--which is an outright untruth---we are in fact among the stingiest nation on earth in terms of humanitarian aid) or "we fund the United Nations"--which is untrue, we fund 23% of it.

So you see the problem with our image.

But then, Americans are a pretty good people, no worse than most of the world. Our government does suck however, big time.

We as a people do make our government policy. We elect people, and if we elect representatives who only serve the interests of the status quo whose fault is it for keeping them in office?

Because US presidents of both mainstream parties (elected by people of the US) dictate their "ideology" and double standards to the world. Look what they (Bullshit Sr. P.J. Clinton and Bullshit Jr., as well as politicians who either call themselves "Republicans" or "Democrats") did in the Balkans-they treat it as their own "rest-room"-there is no better description to that.

It's no longer a country by the people, for the people. It's now a country by the corporation, for the corporation, and George Bush is helping. Big Oil, Big Pharma etc. will be compensating Mr. Bush once he leaves office.

To true. But we are hated around the world because we don't act as if we are a community entity. rather we do what we want in our best interests rather then others. Such as in the case of Iran. And many in the world are jealous of the wealth we have, the might of our military and the fact we use it.

Our country is (comparatively speaking) young. As a people, we are ambitious and we've prospered. Most fail to realize just how much money we've provided to other nations and have forgiven them their debt. We are considered to be loud and boisterous. They want our money. But they don't want us.
