i have recently purchased a laptop, and the fan turns on every 2 minutes..........is this normal?....

is there any thing we can do to reduce the noise or stop the fan?

It does it to keep the processor cool.

There is VERY LITTLE space in a alptop so fans NEED to run to cool it.

Desktop PCs hhave fans on ALL the time, it's normal

Well you cannot STOP the fan and it is strongly advised not trying to do it. Because if the fan will not work, your system will be over-heated and you will face hundreds of new issues.

Normally, the fans on laptops are very quite and you do not feel it moving (I have a Compaq, Toshiba and HP) and in all of them, the fan is very quite that i hardly notice it moving.
If its making too much noise, goto a Toshiba Service Center and get them replaced. It may help you.

Depending on the load on the machine the fan will turn on and off at intervals. If you are working it very hard it may keep the fan on forever.

That's great, it is working normally. It is cycling its operation to keep processor from overheating.
