It is pathetic that the general public is forced to watch Notre Dame weekly, regardless of how good they are. It is of course much worse when they are one of the worst teams in the country, which statistically, they amazingly are.

That being said, there are a TON of people that do want to watch. NBC is no dummy. They know that Notre Dame has the largest fan base in the country, and those fans never miss games, no matter how good they are.
Add these fans to the group of people who watch just to see ND lose and you have a nice group of viewers.
I do think NBC is regretting this decision somewhat. Ratings are certainly down a bit from where they would be if Notre Dame were great (or even average). Nobody ever thought Notre Dame would fall this far when the deal was signed (of course that doesn't explain being forced to watch the service academies on TV-- those games are awful when the Irish are great and even worse when they stink).
Still, as long as the Irish have such a large following, the rest of us will continue to miss much better games while we are shown a winless Notre Dame team play Duke in a few weeks.
Yuk.

True fans stick with their team regardless of their current record. Notre Dame has a HUGE following. You have many options, the most obvious being turn the channel. I have at least 10 games to choose from right this minute and that is regular digital cable. You may also want to consider buying a college football package instead of snivelling.

Notre Dame fans will stick with their team through thick and thin. Notre Dame fans are NOT bandwagoners.

It's pretty terrible, but Notre Dame has one of the most devout football followings out there. Also, remember that the majority of these TV contracts are negotiated in advance of the current seeason (usually 2/3 years in advance). So if you're shelling out the dough, you might as well air the game.

i definitely agree with you here, Notre dame games definitely should not be on national tv for the rest of the season, they just plain old suck, their likely gonna start off 0-8. when the Michigan vs notre dame game was on ABC, i thought what the heck, why would you be playing to 0-2 teams on national tv, what's the point in that? i know it was probably set up before the season started, but they should of moved it and put a better game on. Ithink the only reason the notre dame purdue game is on ESPN today is because purdue is undefeated and everyone wants to see if notre dame will be 0-5, but who really cares, they suck and they're gonna suck the whole frickin year. everybody already knows that Purdue will likely blow them out, so why put the game on ESPN?

And it just so happens that they are playing on ESPN today - and at this moment, making a showing.
But like them or not, they without a doubt, have the largest fan base in the country.
Fans = viewers
Viewers = $$$$

And believe it or not, at this time, they still have the #1 ranked recruitng class for 2008. Go figure.
And no - I am not a ND fan.

Yes. So? The contrcat was made and signed way before ND sucked and the network has to honor that contract. End of story.

YES, I totally agree. My #6 ranked Cal Bears have barely had their games on TV at all even here in Berkeley (have had to order weird premium cable channels or go to bars to watch games) while WINLESS Notre Dame has their games on national television. Pisses me off.
