I can't connect to the net. Internet provider says it is a problem with the machine because the IP address on my LAN begins with 169.254. Don't know what to try to sort this out. Can anyone help.

Thanks

I have broadband internet and my desktop computer is connectred to the net. I have just got a laptop and couldn't connect it to the net. Icontacted my ISP who went through various steps with regard to the local area connection. It didn't help and she told me that because the local area network IP address began with 169.254 it meant it was a problem with the laptop not the modem and the laptop couldn't connect. This is all I know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Although the information you give is a little thin, the IP address you give for your LAN tells me that you do not have a valid one.
169.254.x.x is what Microsoft uses when you are unable to connect to a valid DHCP server. So why did the computer NOT pull one?

Cable isn't plugged in or the network driver is not working, or wireless card isn't working.etc.

Go back to the setup instructions that came with your LAN. If you are connecting to a router, reset the router (just unplug it), reboot the computer and see if it gets a good IP (one that doesn't start with 169.254 . Your issue is with the LAN not the internet unless you are directly connecting into your modem. Even then the issue is that your computer is not getting a working IP address. Once again, start with the setup information that came with your broadband setup or your router setup.

With your additions: try this
Disconnect the cable that is connected to the desktop machine, plug it into your laptops ethernet plug. Restart your laptop. Then see if you connect. If not you will need to tell us your operating system XP/Vista/etc and if your network is set to DHCP (look in the control panel, network settings, LAN adapter TCP/IP be sure it is set to automatic)

I think your ISP may have misunderstood how you are trying to connect to the Internet. I certainly don't understand this, based on what you have said. Do you have an external modem or a router or are you trying to use something built in to the laptop? If you have an external "box", can you tell us the make and model number.

The 169.254.... adress is a default address assigned when a DHCP address can not be allocated (no connection).

Some things you can try are:
- Reboot your router
- Reinstall network card drivers or wireless card drivers
- check the TCP/IP 4 settings on your computer make sure all fields are blank (allows dynamically assigned addresses).
- make sure your broswer does not think its going through a proxy.
-Try command line ping e.g. ping google.com

you're patently not making use of a router. A router takes the only IP handle your enterprise supplies you, and distributes inner IPs to all computers interior your community. in case you have a swap or hub this won't take place, so which you're able to desire to pay your ISP for an added IP handle, some thing that's not nicely worth it in the long-term.
