Open your story with something that will catch the readers' interest like, "On a windy, cold night something strange had happened. Something I will never forget." Then just add details to it like, what happened, how does it end, does it flow? And think about your audience. Who will you write it to? Try mapping your story out before you even think about just writing it. And with a story, you have to feel it. Or it won't work one bit for you or your audience.

Good character analysis to start with. Really flesh our your characters and give them lives. You should know as much about themeas you do your best friend. From there you need a very stprong outline Comlpete with supblots and backstoris. Short stories can be very hard to write because of the space imitations. But they are good exercises or a young writer.Pax - C.

Add a twist at the end that ties to something that is perceived as irrelevant that took place in early stages of the story - this actually would make a good tragedy (by real definition of it)

Open with a hook. Give the reader a character he can root for and identify with. Give the character a goal, desire, or need, and place obstacles in the way. Have there be a climax in which the biggest hurdle yet faces the character. Wrap it up quickly. Have the character change from the experience.

well, when i write stories i think about something in everyday life, or something interesting that happened to me, and build off from there. you could also look at a famous portrait or painting and write a story about the scene. it can realy inspire you
