Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop. Windows Vista basic.
I got a new charger for it and when I hover over the battery icon in the toolbar it says: 0% Available (plugged in, not charging)
Seeing as it's charged 0% whenever it gets unplugged it automatically shuts down. Which is very annoying. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks x

My old charger was 19,5 Voltage and this new one is 19.
You don't think the 0,5V makes a difference do you? x

It isn't at all old.
In fact, this is the first time I've used it.

It could most likely be due to a wrong AC adapter. Sure it could turn on your laptop but it could not charge the battery. The charging circuit would not even turn on because of the low voltage.

i have an inspiron e1505 and i was having the same problem, but not when i got a new charger, just randomly. If you look on at the light where it show the computer is on (i think it is the same for 1501's, but i am not 100% sure), there are three lights, one that says it's on, on that flashes when the hard drive is doing things, and the third is lit when the battery is charging. While plugged in, turn the computer over and take out the battery. Then put the battery back in, and see it that third light then goes on. If so, your battery is charging, YAY! If not, I would suggest calling, or sending an service e-request to Dell, their service department is usually really good about promptly and helpfully answering questions and fixing problems. Hope I could help!

well it could be the charger to the battery. Batteries charge at a very spiciffic frequency, and if the new charger is different from the old one then that might be the problem. Did you buy it from dell of from a different company?
The other could be the battery needs replaced. that shard to tell with out the charger charging it. I assume it was working fine before the new charger so i would try getting one directly from dell if you haven't already, and if that doesn't work then it very well might be the battery.

Try pulling the battery out and putting it back in. The same thing happens on my laptop ever once in a great while...I think the battery just gets slightly shifted out of position. Taking it out and putting it back in always seems to fix it on mine though. I don't think it is the charger considering your laptop runs fine with it plugged in.
