Besides the google method, there are actual sites that schools or teachers can sign up for that contain a whole ton of essays, and they can easily compare something a student turns in to one of these assignments.

Yes, there is, and some of my students have been "naive" enough to include tell-tale signs in what they copied and pasted, so I didn't even have to Google it! Of course, I won't say what those tell-tale signs are here as I wouldn't want to give the less motivated students any ideas! :-)

Try turnitin.com--it will scan the entire paper and come up with a percentage chance that it was plagiarized. Very useful. This is in addition to google like others have suggested. But in my experience, sometimes things don't just pop up in a google search, in which case turnitin.com is very useful.

Yeah. Just google various phrases in the work and see what comes up.

Yep, just do a search for it in quotes. I caught a kid I suspected last year by searching in Google.

If you can find an unusual turn of phrase, google it in quotes. You'd be surprised at how quickly it'll come up.
