4x/9 + 5 = 1/2

When you solve for x it is ALWAYS your goal to perform whatever legal steps will isolate X.
Begin by subtracting 5 from both sides:
4x / 9 = -4 1/2
Hint: this will be easier to work with if you convert -4 1/2 to an improper fraction:
4x / 9 = -9/2
Multiply both sides by 9:
4x = -81 /2
Divide both sides by 4:
x = -81/8
That should do it!

4x = - 9 x 9 / 2= - 81/2
x = - 81/ 8 = -10 1/8
