are there any websites that have free audiobooks for famous books that you can either download and listen to or download the chapter notes that you can read on your ipod?

Yes; Start at the iTunes Music store, they have some free audiobook content, and also many, many free Podcasts.

I know there are other sources for audiobooks, but I am not familiar with them, here's a search for more information on the Apple Discussions pages that might prove helpful:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?threadID=&q=audiobooks+import&objID=&dateRange=thisyear&userID=&numResults=30&rankBy=10001
And this is a websearch for free audiobooks:

Try http://librivox.org/ they have free AudioBooks that you can download (they are in mp3 format).

Also Audiobooks for Free http://audiobooksforfree.com/ and

Literal Systems

I don't think they do chapter notes however
