While it's true that a mage does the most damage per second (dps), I would suggest a warlock if it's going to be your first character. Warlocks can do quite a bit of damage if you put their talent points in the affliction tree. Using your DoTs (damage over time) plus your Drain Life each fight, you have a much higher survivability than a mage could ever hope to have while (s)he's solo'ing. Since your almost all your DoTs are instant, you can even fight more than one enemy at once by "DoT'ing" them all up and draining one of their lives. Plus, you have the handy-dandy pets with you, should you ever find yourself in a predicament you can't get out of yourself. You also have what is called a Soul Stone which you can cast on yourself (or other players in parties) every thirty minutes which makes it to where you can resurrect yourself if you happen to die. Warlocks are alike to mages in that they can only wear cloth (which means people that hit you with physical attacks will take a lot more health away), but both classes have armor spells that will bring up their armor.
Overall, if you're looking for someone with just burst damage and a lot of it, go with a mage, or a destruction spec'd warlock. If you don't mind waiting a bit and watching multiple enemies squirm for a bit longer than they would normally have to, I'd say go with an affliction spec'd warlock.

Well, I have a bunch of characters and I would say that Hunters do a LOT of damage. Probably a warlock would be up there too.
Warriors in groups spend more time trying to hold aggro (can you say Defensive stance...which equals less damage) also they usually tank with a shield and one handed weapon which also equals less damage than if using a two hander.
Pallys can TAKE lots of damage, but don't dish it out as well.
Mages do lots of damage, but usually they get tied up doing crowd control, so that drops their damage some. Priests, well, they just usually run around healing, so usually a no. Shadow priests can do major damage, but healers aren't always easy to find, so shadow priests get stuck healing a lot.
I could go on, but I think you get the point. Hunters can use their pet for damage, either use ranged attacks or dual wield for damage, and they can use their traps to inflict damage. According to Damage Meters, my hunter usually does about 35% of all damage in a group of 5 players. Usually having the tank coming in around 28% or so and the rest distributed throughout the rest of the group. Oh and hunters get mail armor at 40, so you don't have to be scared about running into a melee.

I would agree that a mage is set up to do the most damage, but only to a point. Mages do not have the mana to last in a long battle. In my experience, any fight that lasts longer than six minutes or in which it is impractical to use AoE damage, and that involves skilled players, will show warlock damage exceeding that of the mages.

Mages do the highest damage per shot.
Warlocks do the most damager per second.

Over time those to come pretty close. A warlock piling on enough afflictions, and then cursing in the meantime can do as much damage as a mage wailing away, eventually.

I'd say it depends.
Examples:
1) Mage > Warlock when alone
but when assisted by a shadow priest, Warlock > Mage

2) If the boss has very low armor class, or if it can burn casters' mana, Rogues/druids/warriors will probably top the DPS meter. If not, casters will.

3) Rogue>druid when alone, but Rogue+druid>Rogue+Rogue;
Mage/lock > Shadow priest when alone, but Mage/lock + shadow priest > Mage/lock x 2
etc.
