Isn't this the same government that still suppresses all public memorial services every year at Tiananmen Square?

megalomaniac, I agree. Given the context of trying to makeover their image, especially with the Olympics looming, it makes sense that they would use this as an opportunity to look benevolent. But anyone paying attention can see the obvious contradiction.

Tamara B, while it is true that China is trying to clean up its image, it is also true that there has been no reconciliation to speak of with the victims of Tiananmen. If they truly believed in restraint, they would at the very least allow the victims' families to light candles on the anniversary of the massacre. Currently, the government does not even acknowledge that the massacre took place, nor does it allow publication of anything pertaining to it. If the Chinese are looking better in the eyes of the international community, it is only because they have done a thorough job of whitewashing.

Like many users have already pointed out it is just a PR stunt. I don't believe for one minute they want a democratic Burma. They will say what they have to to look good but underneath it is a totally different story.

At the same time I'm sure they don't want instability. They probably realize there is a limit to what people will put up with and Burma might just be even more Brutal on a wide scale than China, and that's a hard thing to do given China's human rights record.

Burma is a heavy trading partner with China weighing heavily in China's favor. Though if the people starve and the economy falters there is a limit to what China can reap from Burma.

Nope, it's not ironic at all. Tiananmen was quite a while ago, and China is looking to look good in front of the world community, what with both the '08 Olympics and a party election coming up.

Not really because it makes the Chinese look foolish for supporting such a violent despotic government when they are trying to give their international image a makeover.

You could say the same about the US. Not much restrain in the Iraq invasion or the planned Iran attack.

But yes China should put it's house in order before interfering in other countries esp with their own human rights record..

It's ironic you're right Martin L....
but it's good that they say at least something to Burma...

I don't even know the US reaction...Sensible and not ironic or hypocritical I'm sure.

I was in Myanmar 4 years ago....great people..they deserve freedom..
