In Settings or Options (I can't remember which!) there's a setting to start a scan when the PC starts up, or in the Scheduler you should find an option to force a scan when the PC starts if the scheduled scan did not complete. If you disable that, AVG will only carry out a scheduled scan if your PC is running at that time. Given the amount of security issues in XP / Vista, it is advisable to run a full system scan once a day at the very least, so I'd suggest changing the scheduled scan time to coincide with a time that your system is running, but you aren't using it heavily. Use your judgement for the best time!
Personally, as good as AVG is (and being free!) I found that it did not detect every form of virus currently out there. I use Avira (www.free-av.com) as the virus detection is, in my opinion, far superior.
You could always be doubly-sure and run both on the same machine, but if you do, make sure the scheduled scans for each program don't conflict with one-another!
Good luck!

Right click the icon in the tray and then click "Launch AVG Control Center. Now click "Test Center" and then choose "Scheduler".

Do a single left click on "Test plan in basic mode" to select it and then click "Edit Schedule" at the bottom of the window. In the next window remove the check from "Periodically start scheduled antivirus test".

That should do it. You can do the same to the auto update, but I don't advise doing that. You want you anti virus to be as up to date as possibe, and the update process only takes a minute or so.

Very easy.

If you want to stop AVG scanning and updating automatically altogether (and perform them manually), you can turn off these services by following these steps:
1. Right-click the AVG taskbar icon
2. Press "Launch AVG Control Center"
3. Select "Scheduler"
4. Click on "Scheduled Tasks"
5. Select "Test plan in basic mode" (Do not double-click, just select)
6. Click "Edit Schedule"
7. Untick "Periodically start scheduled antivirus test"
(If you would like the test to begin at another time, you may change the automatic test to run at your intended time in the box just below this - labelled "Start daily at ______"
8. Press OK and you'll be back at the previous screen.
9. Select "Update plan in basic mode" (Do not double-click, just select).
10. Click "Edit Schedule"
11. Untick "Periodically check for internet updates" (or read as per directions above to change time for automatic updates).
12. Press OK and voila, it shouldn't update or scan automatically any longer.

It is highly recommended, though, that you always update your antivirus and scan your computer regularly to ensure safety and security of your files and system.

Hope this helps :)

(Edit: Or what everybody else above suggested in the time it took me to write this...LOL)

But you need it to scan daily!!

Change your scan time - optimum is after 6 p.m. as they get all the daily updates out by 6. Change the time in Scheduler on the front page of AVG>

Why Would You Want To Close It?
It runs in the background so it doesnt bother you.

i dont think you can stop it, but you can change the scanning time..
>Click on the AVG Icon in ur system tray.
>when it opens the control center right click on scheduler.
and click schedule tasks.
>edit the test plan in badic mode and change the time.

right click avg down on the task bar at your clock , you can cancel until another night or pause to a time you are not on , say making tea , supper , toilet , etc

it is free so you can not set time or anything else , you will get updates but they only take a miinute

download " free windows defender " in will work in the back ground and will also tell you if you need to use it to scan
