Someone told me the back roads are usually dead straight? Winding country roads are fun to explore so I hope what I heard was wrong.

Depends on where you are; in the Midwest, where it's flat and lands were largely surveyed before they were settled, country roads are mostly north/south or east/west and straight. In many parts of the country, especially if there is some topography to reckon with, the roads follow natural features.

Here in the southeastern US we have a lot of winding country roads and winding Mountain roads. In the Carolina region we have you can see the transition from the steep and winding roads in the foothills to the more straight and flat roads near the ocean.
