Most Catfish are nocturnal and spend most of the day hiding from light and disturbance. Depending on the type of Catfish, there are different ways to solve this problem. Some Catfish like Cories and Pictus prefer large shoals to make them feel more secure. Others like Raphael Catfish are just nocturnal and would be miserable if they were forced into the light. Please let us know what kind of Catfish you have (a name, pictures, or a description would be best) so we can more accurately remedy the situation.

EDIT: I agree with Jackp1ne, it does sound like a Pictus. They are VERY active shoalers and a group should be provided with a 30+ gallon tank to allow them to display their true nature: active shoaling with intermittent chasing. Make sure you have at least 4 (5 is better though) of their own species in a well planted tank with a fairly soft substrate (so they don't hurt their barbels on sharp edges). By getting 4 more Pictus, you will see a remarkable increase in activity.

It sound to me like you have a pictus catfishhttp://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=276
,they tend to be very active swimmers and enjoy being in a group but can be kept alone if you don't have enough room for more. They also like to have some hiding places provided during the day,I use pieces of pvc pipe to make caves for mine.I wouldn't worry about it as that is normal behaviour.
