A pocket of cold humid air and a warm body of water along with a drop in barometric pressure are necessary for the initial stages of hurricane formation.

Usually you need a few things:

1. Ocean water at least approx. 80 degrees F.
2. Little atmospheric wind shear.
3. A tropical wave.

In addition...it is impossible for hurricanes to form within 3 or 4 degrees latitude of the equator because of the Coriolis force.

(1) warm ocean surface(temperature 26.5 degree celcius atleast)
(2)steep lapse rate(to produce convective clouds)
(3)Sufficient moisture in the atmosphere (upto atleast 5 Kms height)
(4) A pre-existing near-surface disturbance (with suffient vorticity and convergence)
(5) place of origin should be atleast 500 Kms from the equator(so that coriolis force will act) and (6) Absence of vertical wind shear(which otherwise will disturb the formation).
