Is there anywhere on the lable in the glove box in a 1988 Chevy Silverado 4X4, that tells what the rear end gear ratio is? Thanks.

Yes, the option label will have a code of a letter and numbers like G80 or such that a GM dealer parts dept can decode to tell what ratio gears the truck came with...call a dealer parts dept for which code to look for. The option label can tell you every option the vehicle has.

The only place you will find anything is on the diff itself. There should be a placard attached to one of the cover bolts. With that, you could call a dealer and find out the ratio. The other way is to lift up the back and with the trans in neutral, turn the drive shaft (make sure both wheels turn together) until the wheels make 1 full revolution. Keep track of how many times the drive shaft turned and now you have your final drive ratio.

Not that I know of. It's not hard to determine; take the cover off, divide the number of teeth on the big gear by the number of teeth on the small gear, thats the ratio. Replace the cover with a new gasket, take the plug out and fill with new 80w oil, good to go. 3.73 was common. Good luck.

The mid 80 models had an options list in the glove compartment but that's no guarrantee it's still there. There may be a tag on one of the differential cover bolts or it may be stamped into one of the axle housings.
